Chapter 13: Cold Front

Well well well, where have you guys been? I know school's started for some of y'all, but you can't just abandon us.. ain't that right Green. I'm Not Even In The Mood. It was a little after noon when S.B. walked into the main room. Due to his startling awakening, S.B. was unusually cautious. Nicki didn’t go into details after she abruptly ended his sleep. She just punched him in his arm a few times, shoved him the clothes that he left in her bathroom, and told him to make a quiet exit to his room. There was a familiar look on her face as she paced around the room. She quickly straightened up and went into her closet to find something to wear. When she came back out she headed to the bathroom. Not before stopping to give S.B. a ‘didn’t you hear what I said nigga?’ look. S.B. scooted to the door but stopped to listen to the newly discovered noise. He could hear the well known beep bop boop beat of a Nintendo game. He opened the door just enough for him to squeeze out, twisted the handle so it wouldn’t click as he shut the door, and made it swiftly down the hall to his room. After he quickly got ready for the day he left his room to greet his guest.

The scene was really quiet, considering the fact that Martin and Micaiah were playing a Wii. He brushed it off as concentration when he saw the Burger King bags and made his way to the kitchen. The girls seemed to be into it, making an occasional cheer. Well, at least Candi. Lauren seemed focus on her phone. “Damn, dudes ain’t got no type of hospitality.” Lauren blurted out as she noticed S.B. rummaging through the fast food paper bags.

“Naw, you saw me enter the room, but you didn’t speak.” S.B. responded as he set the timer on the microwave and shut the door a little too hard. This caught Martin’s attention for 2 seconds too long, giving Micaiah just the small advantage he needed.

“Yeah!” Candi yelled, jumping up from her seat and punching the air. Micaiah flashed a grin very reminiscent of his sister’s.

“I quit.” Martin said, as he went to sit the controller down.

“You mean, you loose.” S.B. added with a smirk. Everybody laughed, even Martin.

“But I still own your score.” Martin shot back, referring to that night at Chuck E. Cheese. Lauren ooohed.

“But I still own your life.” S.B. joked referring to salary rankings. Candi and Lauren tried to hold it in but little grunts escaped them.

“It’s okay Martin, you’ll win next time.” Micaiah insured him while patting him on his back. Martin smiled.

“That’s what they tell losers.” S.B. teased. Lauren laughed and nodded in agreement while Candi made her way over to Micaiah.

“That’s right honey, he could.” Candi said to Micaiah disregarding S.B.’s last comment and embracing him. Honey? I didn’t think of that, nice. Micaiah thought to himself.

“Yeah, yeah.” S.B. said approaching them. “Sup lil man, it’s been a while.” He added, holding out his hand for some dap. Micaiah looked at it, but continued holding Candi, leaving S.B. hanging.

“Damn, it’s like that now?” S.B. said trying to play off his shock. “Bros ova..”

“Foes, ya jerk.” Nicki interrupted, as she entered the room. Lauren, Martin and Candi all shook their heads.

“Yeah, that’s what I was bout to say.” S.B. responded as Nicki finished making her round of hugs.

“Umm hmm.” She huffed, passing him by as she headed to the kitchen. She was hungry but nothing in the bags looked appetizing. “Which one of y’all wanna go out and get me some real food?” They all looked around at each other with the same ‘not me’ expression.

“Martin.” S.B. volunteered. “I mean it is his job.” Martin shook his head.
          “True, but you be gettin’ stuff wrong.” Nicki said, making eye contact with Martin. He nodded his head dramatically, causing her to laugh.

“I’ll go, Nicki.” Micaiah said.

“I know you would Caiah, but you can’t go by yourself.” She sighed.

“I’ll go too, just make a list.” Candi caved.

“Thanks girl.” She said as she began to search drawers for some paper and a pen. After Nicki wrote the list and printed out a MapQuest she sent them on their way.

The ride there was quiet, but Candi didn’t mind because it made it easier to focus on finding an unfamiliar place. They got there with little to no hassle, only missing the parking lot entrance once. After she placed the orders for takeout, she led Caiah over to the plaza. They went into Vons and got some soda and junk food for the house. She asked him if he wanted something, but he just grabbed a couple things and put them in the cart without responding. After they made their purchases, they headed back to Sizzlers to retrieve the food.

 “Do you think we should grab a few movies?” Candi asked, because they were approaching a movie rental store. Caiah just shrugged his shoulders. Candi found this odd because second to games, he loved movies. Something was off.

“Are you okay, hun?” Candi asked sincerely. This made his stomach swim. “You’ve been quieter than usual.”

“I’m cool.” Micaiah said, simply. But you already know that. He added in his head. If only I could be so bold.

“I know that.” She chuckled. He attempted to smile but failed. “There’s something bothering you?” He let out a sigh.

“Kinda, but I don’t want to talk about it.” He confessed. But I really want too. He thought.

“Oh, well, you don’t have to.” She said, while checking the food to see if everything was right. They forgot an order of chicken strips but they apologized for the mistake and gave her more than she’d paid for. Caiah grabbed a bag with his free hand before going back to the car. Candi followed suit.
